Match Play Rules

The Match Play Tournament is conducted in a World Cup format with four quads, headed by the previous year’s semifinalists.  The remainder of the set up will be handled by a random lottery draw. There will be 4 or 5 players in each quad, depending on the number of members for the season.  All matches will be played at full handicap allowance.

Early going is a round robin format, so everybody will have at least 3 matches to play (4 in any quad with 5 players). All round robin matches are 9 holes only and can be halved.  2 points for a win, 1 for a halved match.  The top two finishers in each quad move on and the balance of the tournament is a single-elimination format.

An important thing to remember is that there can be a need for a tiebreaker in the standings at the end of round robin play.  The first tiebreaker is the result of a head to head match, but if the head to head was halved or in the event of a 3-way tie the second tiebreaker is the number of holes won over the course of the round-robin mini-tournament.  What this means is that even if a match is won by a player after however many holes, you need to play out the full 9 and record the match winner along with the number of holes won by each player.

Beginning with the quarterfinals, as it progresses to a single elimination format matches can extend past the 9 holes if tied.  If extra holes are necessary, strokes are to be given in the same manner as they fall on the card for the first 9 holes.  If the lack of daylight intereres with completion of the match, it can be resumed at a later date at the point where it was suspended.

The final and consolation matches are to be 18 hole matches and can be played anywhere, not just at Hyatt, as agreed apon by the competitors.

Any matches not completed in a timely manner—a deadline will be given for all round robin matches and 2 missed match dates are allowed per competitor for the single elimination matches—will be determined as a bye/forfeit/disqualification. Members can schedule their match on a non-league day by mutual consent.
